An exemplar of model-based cognitive neuroscience.
Are categories learned by forming abstract prototypes or by remembering specific exemplars? Mack, Preston, and Love observed that patterns of functional MRI (fMRI) brain activity were more consistent with patterns of representations predicted by exemplar models than by prototype models. Their work represents the theoretical power of emerging approaches to model-based cognitive neuroscience.
متن کاملModel-based cognitive neuroscience
This special issue explores the growing intersection between mathematical psychology and cognitive neuroscience. Mathematical psychology, and cognitive modeling more generally, has a rich history of formalizing and testing hypotheses about cognitive mechanisms within a mathematical and computational language, making exquisite predictions of how people perceive, learn, remember, and decide. Cogn...
متن کاملModel-Based Cognitive Neuroscience: A Conceptual Introduction
This tutorial chapter shows how the separate fields of mathematical psychology and cognitive neuroscience can interact to their mutual benefit. Historically, the field of mathematical psychology is mostly concerned with formal theories of behavior, whereas cognitive neuroscience is mostly concerned with empirical measurements of brain activity. Despite these superficial differences in method, t...

Exemplar-Based Random-Walk Model 2 Abstract A fundamental issue in cognitive psychology and cognitive science concerns the manner in which people represent categories in memory and make decisions about category membership. In this chapter we provide a review of a process-oriented mathematical model of categorization known as the exemplar-based random-walk (EBRW) model (Nosofsky & Palmeri, 1997a...
متن کاملToward an Exemplar-based Computational Model for Cognitive Grammar 1 Usage-based Models of Language Structure
An exemplar-based computational framework is presented which is compatible with Cognitive Grammar. In an exemplar-based approach, language acquisition is modeled as the incremental, data-oriented storage of experiential patterns, and language performance as the extrapolation of information from those stored patterns on the basis of a language-independent information-theoretic similarity metric....
